Patch Backing Types Explained: Iron-On, Velcro, Adhesive, and More

Guides Updated August 16, 2026 6 min read

Iron-on, Velcro, sew-on, and plastic patch backing samples in a row

Key takeaways

  • Sew-on is the most durable option for jackets and uniforms.
  • Iron-on needs compatible fabric and correct heat—skip it on nylon, leather, and waterproof shells.
  • Velcro is the standard for morale and tactical patches you will swap.
  • Name the backing on your quote so the free mockup matches how the patch will be worn.

A custom patch is only as useful as its backing. Order the wrong one and a beautiful logo peels off a hat or will not stay on a plate carrier. This guide is the conversation we have with UK customers before the mockup: how will you wear it, what is the fabric, and will you swap it?

Backing comparison

Backing Best for Skip when
Sew-on Jackets, uniforms, hats you keep You need to swap daily
Iron-on Cotton and many blends, quick attach Nylon, leather, waterproof shells
Velcro hook Morale patches on loop panels The garment has no loop field
Velcro loop When the patch is the soft side You meant the scratchy hook side
Adhesive Short events, temporary display Wash, heat, or long outdoor use
Plastic Stiffer badges, some sew-on jobs You want a soft drape
Safety pin Lanyards, temporary display Kids’ sports or heavy wear

Sew-on

The most durable option for jackets and uniforms. No heat, no adhesive to fail. Plan a few extra minutes with a needle—or a tailor. Sew-on works with embroidered, woven, chenille, and many PVC edges. If the garment is expensive, sewing is cheaper than replacing a peeled iron-on.

Iron-on

Heat-activated adhesive is fast on cotton and many blends. Follow temperature and time. Press, do not slide. Let it cool. Even then, a few stitches around the edge add insurance. Leather, nylon, and waterproof shells often reject iron-on. When in doubt, sew or use Velcro.

Velcro (hook and loop)

Standard for morale and tactical patches in the UK. You can swap designs on bags and vests. Hook is the scratchy side that grips loop panels. We can include hook, loop, or both. Say which panel you have so the mockup notes the correct side.

Adhesive, plastic, and pins

Peel-and-stick works for short events and display boards. It is not a wash solution. Plastic backing adds stiffness for a badge-like feel. Safety pins are handy for lanyards and temporary display. Tell us how the patch will be worn and we will recommend a backing on your free mockup.

How to specify backing on your order

Write the garment and the backing in the quote notes: “3-inch embroidered, sew-on, cotton coach jacket.” Our 5-piece minimum applies per design. Mockups usually go out within 12 hours. After approval, production plus UK-wide shipping is typically 7–12 business days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Velcro later if I ordered sew-on?

You can sew loop or hook onto a finished patch, but it is cleaner to spec it at order. Order the backing you will actually use.

Will iron-on survive a dryer?

High heat is the enemy. Even on cotton, we recommend sewing the edge if the garment will be washed often.

What backing for a baseball cap?

Sew-on is the most reliable through sweat and rain. Iron-on can work on some twill hats; test or sew.

Do I need both hook and loop?

Only if you are creating a pair (patch plus a sew-on loop field). Most morale patches ship with hook on the back.

Is adhesive waterproof?

No. Use PVC plus Velcro for wet gear, not peel-and-stick fabric adhesive.

Can different pieces in one order have different backings?

Yes. Treat each spec as its own design line if the backing or size changes. Minimum is 5 per design.
